| Closet Make-Over |
|
- September 19, 2011
BBy: Daphne Munro;
- By: Quita Jackson: Quita Jackson
PHOENIX - The season is changing and so is fashion. But this doesn’t mean it’s time to spend cash shopping for new clothes.
Latonya Adkins, owner of HourGlass Apparel , says you can take advantage of the clothes you already have in your closet.
THREE THINGS WOMEN SHOULD HAVE
According to Adkins, your closet should have:
1. A blazer - choose a well made blazer that looks great with a pair of jeans, slacks and the little black dress 2. Little black dress or wrap dress - this dress is appropriate, versatile and can be worn for any number of events. 3. Accessories (fashion belts, scarves, jewelry and purses)
FASHION TIPS, NO MATTER WHAT SEASON
• Separate your clothes by categories (darks and lights, by lengths, or pants, shirts and dresses) • Do not put your spring and summer clothes away. Pair them with blazers, tops, skirts and accessories. • Educate yourself by watching fashion shows on television, pick up a style magazine, or Google the "NOW" fashion trend.
TIME FOR A CLOSET MAKEOVER
• You can determine what pieces you can use to enhance your fashion style by what is in fashion magazines and on television. You will come up with fabulous outfits from your closet without spending a dime. • Know what you have in your closet. It will help a lot when building a wardrobe. Make sure to organize your closet first so garments are not forgotten. You probably need to discard some pieces that you have not worn in years. Make sure they still fit. • After organizing everything figure out what accessories (belts, scarves, purses, jewelry, etc.) go best with each outfit.
These simple tips will help make what you have go a long way, while keeping you stylish and keeping your wallet full.

Tiyada-Michelle is wearing a black versitile rap dress that can be worn three different ways. 1. With sleeves 2. Sleeveless / halter style 3. Criss Cross or twisted in back

|
How to accentuate your silhouette: Asha (apple /rectangle shape-usually proportioned from top to bottom with a slight ) is wearing a rap dress with a handkerchief hemline in front. The thin sash belt at the natural waistline will draw the eye up. Don't: wear baggy or too tight with a apple shape. Allow the garment to fall effortless onto your curves. This dress can be worn for the office and easily transition to evening with accessories and pair of heels.
Doranna (pear shape/triangle-petite on top and fuller in the hip/bottom) is wearing a black jumpsuit with pockets. Short kimono sleeves. It has a V-neck front with Elastic ankles. This jumpsuit highlights her slender waist and dark color keeps it sleek. Don't: wear pencil skirts and garments too tight around the hips, it will emphasize that area.
Naomi (pear shape-petite on top and fuller in the hip/bottom) is wearing a plunging V-neck gown with rhinestones. This dress has a full split and is fully lined with chiffon. Don't: same as above...
Briana (rectangle shape-fairly proportioned on top, middle and bottom. There is no main area to minimise so you can wear anything) is wearing an black and white dress with exaggerated pockets and matching belt. The pockets create or give the illusion of hips. Don't: wear low rise pants, it will make the torso appear very long. So wear garments with volume in the areas you want to emphsize.

Every year, Phoenix Fashion Week has focused not only on finding talented local designers, but models as well. Coming upon our 7th anniversary, this year is no different. Phoenix Fashion Week hosted an incredibly successful Model Search at Axis/Radius in Scottsdale, Saturday July 23rd, sponsored by vitaminwater. Nearly 200 models braved the high temperatures and waited in line in hopes of being chosen as one of 40 models to walk in Phoenix Fashion Week this fall. Judges at the search included Dolce Salon and Spa, Operations Director Brenna Moses, Style Leader Justin Lee and Executive Director Brian Hill. “The turnout went beyond our expectations, not only by the sheer volume but the quality of models,” Hill said. Ultimately, the best of the bunch were selected as the top 40 (25 women and 15 men) and will compete in multiple challenges à la America’s Next Top Model. From the top 40 models, one will be chosen as the Model of the Year, with the winner receiving a lust worthy prize package, including a signed deal with a local agency. These challenges are new to Phoenix Fashion Week this year, but are a welcomed addition. “Based on the success of our emerging designer contest, we wanted to create the same idea for our models. It provides a platform for them to receive the skills and knowledge they need to be a successful model, ” Hill said.
Just three days after the search, hair styling and makeup sponsor Dolce was happy to provide amazing makeovers to all 40 models, whether it was extensions, coloring or a

dramatic cut. The first challenge for the models also took place on this day, the Headshot Challenge. Top 40 newbie Gavin Tucker thoroughly enjoyed this challenge and all the new industry professionals he was able to network with. “The photos that were taken came out amazing, and I was very pleased with all the hospitality. I met alot of great photographers, stylists, and I loved my experience at Dolce!” Like Tucker, the models exuded confidence and rocked their new looks in front of the camera for these close up shots, by talented Phoenix Fashion Week photogs Mikel Florman, Stella Crowl and others. The models have already moved onto their next challenge, the Runway Challenge, where they receive crucial coaching from now until fashion week. The third challenge is a Print Campaign Challenge, where they must act as if hired by vitaminwater to represent one of four flavors in a print campaign. The last challenge, which will be ongoing until fashion week, is the Social Media Challenge, where models will have a personal page on the PHXFW website and must market themselves to receive votes from the public.
The Headshot Challenge winner was kept under wraps until the Model Announcement Party that Thursday, July 28th at The Mint in Oldtown Scottsdale.

- Challenge Winner Cassie Brooks
Phoenix Fashion Week saw their biggest turnout numbers ever for a meetup this night, with over 300 locals and fashionistas coming out to support these talented models, including fashion bloggers and media, as well as last year’s emerging designer winner SJ Couture and this year’s emerging designer, Deeds of Love. These top 40 models sported stylish Phoenix Fashion Week black tanks and tees, while strutting to cheers, camera flashes and smiles from the crowd. After every model’s name was called, the highly anticipated winner of the Headshot Challenge was announced…Cassie Brooks! Her fabulous headshot and edgy new pixie cut were featured on a Phoenix Fashion Week magazine cover mock up and revealed for the first time on the runway this night. Brooks, a repeat top 40 model, is hoping to gain another year of experience and amazing memories through Phoenix Fashion Week. “It is such an honor to be a part of this again…PHXFW has inspired me and helped me see that I CAN do anything.”
Already, these models are gaining valuable experience in the industry, as well as making connections and booking jobs. Ashley Luccitti, new to the model search and Phoenix Fashion Week this year, is featured in emerging designer Mabella Chic’s lookbook, with another photoshoot coming soon. “I hope to get my name and face out there to continue to get work which will lead to bigger and better jobs! I am also majoring in fine arts photography…PHXFW is a good place for me to make connections in the photography world also,” Luccitti said.
The next event on Phoenix Fashion Week’s jam packed calendar is the much anticipated 2nd “Shop Garment District” featuring the 10 Emerging Designers of Phoenix Fashion Week, where attendees will have the opportunity to shop these next “IT” designers. This will also be in conjunction with the models’ second challenge, the Runway Challenge, and each designer will preview a few of their designs on four models that walk the runway and reflect the skills they have acquired through the runway coaching.
